Farming Practices

Castello del Trebbio is a family project dedicated to crafting the highest quality wine. In order to do this, energy is focused on Biointegrale farming methods in the vineyard, allowing grapes to express the geography, geology, and climate, and taking a non-intrusive approach in the cellar. This translates into great wine.

Biointegrale

Being Biointegrale means following a new concept of ethical farming that requires the return of agriculture to nature. It places an importance on environmental protection as an essential requirement for the future.

Biointegrale methods used in the vineyard include respecting the fundamental principles of biodiversity, eliminating the use of synthetic chemicals, reducing human intervention, choosing rational and traditional farming practices, and favoring the use of animals and plows. In addition, Biointegrale minimizes the handling of raw materials in order to preserve natural characteristics, quality and flavor of the wine.

Alongside these agricultural practices, the Castello follows sustainable practices that benefit the environment. All of the electrical systems have been renewed and the wiring has been completely buried: obtaining major protection from electromagnetic pollution, as well as reducing the aesthetic impact. All of the boilers in the facility (both in agricultural and agriturismo) have been replaced to perform better with less waste. Solar panels have been installed on the roofs of an agriturismo farmhouse and on the cellar. In winter, rooms are heated with fireplaces where only wood from the property’s oak forests is used. Lastly, all the property’s natural wells have been restored and flow together into the reservoirs from where the irrigation system gets its water.

Winemaking

Amphorae (terra cotta vessels) are amongst the oldest wine storage containers dating back to ancient times when they were utilized to move wine from ancient Greece to other parts of Europe. Castello del Trebbio uses Amphorae in winemaking to achieve distinct and rare characteristics in our wines.
